Thermally efficient spaces most often have more moisture present in the room and coming into it from other parts of the house, and how active is the circulation of air in the room. The problem is more serious with modern houses than with old-fashioned ones, for with houses which are tightly built and do not have open fireplace flues to draw air in form outdoors and constantly change the air indoors, the infiltration of the drier outdoor air is much less, and the humidity of the air in a tight well-insulated house tends to remain at a higher level than in a house which is "thermally leaky," and is poorly insulated or not insulated at all. Thus the best modern house tends to give the most trouble with condensation on walls and windows. The condensation of moisture on metal sash can be fairly serious, and the total condensation on a metal sash window including both metal and glass would be considerably greater than on a wooden sash of equal area, though the temperature of the glass will be approximately the same in both cases."
"....Lowering the relative humidity of the room air to the degree needed to prevent condensation is not always possible, since moisture is added to the air by normal sources within the house. Humidity also comes into the air of a room by the evaporation of moisture stored in walls, woodwork, furniture and draperies during periods of higher humidity."
".....Keeping the humidity low by avoiding unnecessary evaporation into the air of the room or section of the house, as by keeping doors closed that connect to bathroom, laundry and kitchen, etc., will help."
The above quotations give you an idea of some of the factors involved in the problem. There are only two practical methods by which condensation on windows and walls can be overcome: (1) by raising the temperature of the inside surface of the glass or walls, and (2) by lowering the humidity of the air in the room.
The Spartan Manor Trailercoach is soundly constructed and well insulated, and should not, under usual circumstances, present any more condensation difficulties than the average well insulated modern home. However, the space in a house trailer is much less than in a house, and if a number of people are inside the trailer or if cooking is underway, the moisture content of the air is more easily raised. Precautions should be taker and as much ventilation as is comfortable should be secured from the admission of outdoor air. If your trailer is tightly closed to the outside air while a teakettle is steaming, it will be possible to fill the trailer with warm, moist air, which is not desirable during cold weather. If a teakettle is to be used, it should be for only a few minutes. Prolonged steaming or cooking of other dishes likewise should be avoided in cold weather.
